Trompe l'oeil (pronounced 'tromp loi') - A French term meaning trick the eye.

The aim is to create an optical illusion by using perspective, shadow, light and scale to deceive the viewer into thinking that they are seeing a real three dimensional space or object, instead of paint on a two dimensional surface.

Sometimes you want to blow the viewer away, but at other times you want to make the work so quiet as to be ambient.  I often explain to clients that the idea is to "dissolve the wall" blending the edge so that one accepts it as part of the room.
