At Tucker's Ice cream on Alameda Island, they had a big wall with a big problem. It felt cold, and any art they hung became overpowered by the scale of this enormous wall (25' x 35'). As if that wasn't enough, the wall had been retrofitted with a steel seismic bracing. The job became one of trying to come up with a solution that would expand and warm up the room, by blending into the architecture of this marvelous old building, and giving enough structure that the eye of the viewer would be distracted away from the bracing. I went out to the old naval air station at the north end of the island, and took some shots of this classic view of the city. This then became the backdrop for a 'patio extension'. I recently sent a prospective client down to Tucker's, to take a look at the job. They called back confused, "did we go to the right place?". They had just been standing 10 feet away from a 25' x 35' mural and simply accepted it as real.... |
